How smart are VW alternators?

$

I'm thinking about changing the start batteries for our VW 265 over to Optima red tops. However, I will still be keeping a pair of sealed flooded lead acid batteries for the domestic side. I just wondered whether this will affect the charging regime from the alternator, particularly as the batteries are combined by a split chart relay.

Charge air temperature.

Hi all,

My charge air temperature sensor that you read from the panel on my 100 HP VW 5 cylinder engine usually reads about 120 degrees C when steaming at cruising speed. I mentioned this to my VW engineer whilst he was doing my cam belt change and he thinks this little high, has any one noticed what theirs read whilt cruising? I checked out the temp range of the sensor and it is from 20 to 135 degrees C.  I think this engine has not got the inlet intercooler like the 150 hp version.

Many thanks

Has anyone tried to tighten the drive belts, arvor must have been having a laugh when they came up with this design you need to be double jointed working through cabin floor locker or is there an easier way , does anybody know the belt size as i cant see any markings on mine.

Arvor 210 Sliding Door Problem

Hi, have a 210 with the centre cabin; the sliding door has come off the top runners which have sheared off. The door does move but now has to be lifted rather than slid.

Anyone experienced this? Seem to have to remove an awful lot of plastic to get to the runners. Any idea on parts or should I just go to a local double glazing co (seems the easiest route maybe).

Any thoughts?

DSC functionality problem

Hi all,

I, like expect a lot of us, have Navman VHF, plotter and fishfinder fitted to my 215. Ever since I bought the boat the VHF has never displayed lat and long, as required by DSC, and until I switched off the alarm an alarm would sound after a couple of minutes.

I have a had an initial dig around the wiring and everything looks to be connected properly.

I noticed that a mate of mine with a 230 has exactly the same problem and was wondering if anyone else out there had experienced this and had managed to fix it.

It sure would be nice to have this working.

Cheers in advance

painting the hatches

Hi everybody,
I have a small leak in the cabin deckhead hatch on my 21.5 and have bought the correct (I hope) rubber to fit the seal, when it is out I may as well go the whole hog and paint the frame before I put in the new rubber, has anybody else done this job? if so what way did you prep the metal surround, it is alloy I think and want the best paint job finish I can get, I have plastic-cote spray white for the top coat (s) but need to know what is the best prep coat. the poor finish on the hatch lets my boat down, If I have enough rubber seal left I may as well do the side window whilst I am at it.
thanks in advance

Prop puller

First off a very merry Christmas to all the forum, lets hope 2013 gives us all tight lines!
Some time ago there was a post about making a puller to get the prop off the shaft, I copies it out at the time and filed it away, I am sorry but can't remember who posted it the first time but big thanks to him, I have had a bit of time on my hands lately and made myself one, boy did it do the trick, the prop was off the shaft within 5 minutes from start to finish, I have attached a photo of the gadget, well worth the trouble  and very little expence making it. big thanks again to the original poster.
it is made up of a metal square, with a hole in each corner, (60mm between the hole centres) 4  x12mm threaded rods (I cut mine to 135mm long) and another metal square that is split in half and has a 30mm hole cut and filed smooth in it, this collar goes to the for'd end of the prop whilst the 4 legs pass through the prop blades and are then put through the holes in the square, a 12mm nut is attached to each one and slowly each nut is turned which forces the plate against the end of the shaft ( I glued a small bit of thick rubber on it to save the end of the shaft) and in time the prop will pop off the keyway, saves banging the hell out of it with various drifts of timber.
all the best for the season

Fuel tank options

G'day I am after some advice on increasing the range on a 20ft series 1.  At this stage we're looking at putting an additional fuel tank just inside the cabin by removing the step and getting a tank made to run across the width of the boat under the 2 seats.

Is there any known issues in removing the step?

Any weight problems by adding about 100kg/200lbs in there?

Anything we haven't thought of that could be an issue?

Thanks in advance for the advice!!

Nanni sea water pump rebuild 85 HP

Towards the end of last season I noticed about 1/2 inch of water in the bilge, which for my boat ( 2003 20 footer ) is unusual as it is normally dry. I traced the leak to the JOHNSON sea water pump shaft seal.
After removing the pump and stripping it down this winter I found the pump end seal and also the inter seal spacer in poor nick.
In fact the spacer had completely disintegrated so I made up a new one from a bit of 28 mm industrial pipe joint. With slots to allow for leaks to escape. In the picture the new spacer is between the  seals and the remains of the old one below.
Renewed both seals , NOT both the same size as the gear end is 16mm and the pump end 17mm. Can be easily sourced on line but difficult to ensure that the pump end one has the all important stainless steel garter spring. Asap do them for about a tenner each but can be sourced locally for a fraction of that.
Stripping of the pump is straightforward, there is no need to undo the big nut by the gearwheel, just the big circlip holding the bearings and shaft in.
Pleased to say that my bilge is now dry ! I am not familiar with the actual Jabsco make but assume that construction is similar.
If any one has to do this job, and is not sure, I will be happy to advise.

Just had a bit of a fiddle with the prop after taking the boat out and there is a bit of up and down  movement in the shaft I am making the assumption its the cutlass bearing so I  think it will have to be done ,  would like to do it myself but havent got a clue on how to go about it . Its never been changed in 8 years so I expect problems I would be grateful for any advice on how to do it and what bits etc .

Just ordered a new in hull transducer , it does not sit in any fluid bath  but sticks straight on hull (third of the price), I know it needs a good no void connection between it and the hull and needs to be level, I have the spot to fit it but cant make my mind up what to fix it with epoxy or sikaflex , Ive got both. Good evening all.
I have a 30AS with a VW 150TDI and VW Console.
My problem is that I have a default displayed on my Console. When I turn the key it goes to Set Up and then quickly  to Default.
I have down loaded the Manual on the display Console below but in the manual it shows a 3 position key switch.
Mine is just a straight off on . I have tried pressing the E stop but no good and I have pressed every button possible ,
Any ideas,
Regards,
Buster

HI, Could you please give me any information on the nanni diesel engine.Which is the best engine for the arvor 230,115hp 0r 130 hp. What could you expect in top speed and cruising speed on both these engine and do they have any major problems wih either engine. What would you expect in fuel consumption for either engine.I am very sorry to ak so many questions but i have been out of boating nearly 30 years due to work commitments, but i am now retired and looking to restart.I have looked at many boats but the arvor looks ideal for my fishing and boating needs.
